OpenStreetMap is a volunteer project that aims to create freely available map data for the whole world. The data are licensed using the Creative Commons CC-By-SA licence. Coverage and quality varies and the dataset is changing on a daily basis. Major highways in western Europe are covered and many European cities are covered in detail - central London, for example, is well mapped including landuse information and footpaths that are missing from all but the most expensive commercial datasets. The project website has a web interface where the latest mapping can be viewed. We have experience in using OpenStreetMap data (for example, the road network used in our free Mileage Calculator was derived from the OpenStreetMap highway layer) and can advise on whether it is suitable for a particular project, or reprocess the data into a suitable form.
